A wonderful addition to the winter garden, when the clusters of bright red berries offer a welcome splash of colour, back-lit by the rich green, spiny-edged leaves. This variety of our native English holly makes an excellent hedge if clipped annually in late summer and its prickly leaves make it ideal for deterring potential intruders. This female cultivar, while self-fertile, will require benefits from a male variety of holly nearby, or a planted companion such as Ilex aquifolium ‘Golden Queen’ or ‘Silver Queen’ to produce reliable and numerous berries.
- Garden care: Plants grown as free-standing specimens require minimal pruning – remove diseased or misplaced branches in spring. Trim plants grown as formal hedges in late summer. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant
| Option | 2 litre pot, 7 litre pot, 1.0 – 1.2m tall |
