A fabulous, dual-purpose red-flushed, yellow plum. Delicious when picked fresh from the tree, or for adding flavour and texture to many sumptuous culinary dishes such as tarte aux mirabelles.
This damson has been grafted onto Saint Julian A rootstock. This semi-vigorous rootstock is tolerant of most soil types, and will eventually produce a tree approximately 5m x 5m.
- Garden care: Bare root plants should be planted out as soon as they arrive. If this is not possible, they can be heeled in temporarily (covering their roots with soil) or potted up. Before planting, soak the rootball in a bucket of water for half an hour and make sure to incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole. Stake firmly in exposed positions and keep the base of the tree weed free. Fertilise at the beginning of each year and water regularly during hot, dry spells. Young trees may need extra support under the fruit-bearing branches to avoid them breaking under the weight of a heavy crop. Alternatively, it may be necessary to thin the crop in the early stages of establishment.
Stone fruits like the mirabelles should be pruned in the summer because they are prone to a disease called silver leaf which enters through cuts. If you prune in late summer, the sap is slowing but is still running fast enough to seal up any wounds. Check and remove any damaged, diseased or broken branches.
